What warrants an upgrade?

Sep 21,2014 - Last updated at Sep 21,2014

That the US Senate should upgrade Israel’s privileged status from a “major non-NATO ally” to a “a major strategic partner” is no surprise.

The US House of Representatives had already done so last March to reinforce the special US-Israeli relations.

But what does the move tell the rest of the friends and allies the US has in the region?

This change of status must come with even more privileges for Israel, including the fact that it ensures its qualitative military edge in the region, and expands economic cooperation, including cyber security coordination, between Tel Aviv and Washington.

Another question is what prompted this US move at such a critical time, when the region is witnessing turmoil and upheavals?

The US has always enjoyed the best relations with Israel and stood by it at all times, including when it waged wars on the Arab countries.

As such, the latest “upgrade” causes fear that Israel will only show even more military arrogance and become even more hostile to its neighbours, at a time peace is badly needed in the region.

Had this “gift” been made contingent on Israel making peace with the Palestinians, it would have made good sense.

As is, and especially coming after Israel committed serious crimes during its war on Gaza, the US Congress sends a negative signal to the Arab countries and plays into the hands of extremists now wreaking havoc on the Middle East.

It is still not too late for the US Congress to call on Israel to negotiate in good faith with the Palestinians and put an end to their decades-long plight by agreeing to the two-state solution that would enable Palestinians to establish their own state and live side by side in peace with Israel.
